Yuasa Daruma is a family company established more than 200 years ago in the city of Takasaki, located about 100 km north of Tokyo in Gunma Prefecture.
The tradition of daruma crafting in Takasaki dates back to around 1690, and the region remains the most famous center for daruma production in Japan today. These dolls are commonly known as Takasaki Daruma.
The daruma represents Bodhidharma, a Buddhist monk who came from China to Japan to teach Buddhism. He is traditionally depicted with a beard, sitting in meditation with his arms and legs folded beneath his robe.
Takasaki daruma typically represent a meditating Bodhidharma with blank eyes. In Japanese tradition, daruma dolls are purchased for oneself or given as gifts to bring luck and success.
There are two traditional ways to use a daruma:
First, paint the right eye while making a wish or setting a goal. When the wish is fulfilled, paint the second eye.
Alternatively, write a goal or resolution on the daruma, paint the right eye, and once the goal is achieved, paint the left eye.
